The Lifecycle of Pestonium
Dr. Doveran realized that Pestonium wasn't just a mineral; it was a "universal catalyst" capable of bridging the gap between organic biology and silicon-based technology. In honor of this discovery, both the planet and the element were named after their digital pioneer.
Harvesting: The Extraction Frontier
Pestonium occurs naturally in deep "veins" and surface outcroppings throughout the planet’s crust. However, it is most abundant in the Pest-Zones, where the environment is at its most hostile. Heavy-duty HOG Corp. harvesters utilize sonic-resonant drills to shatter the ore while maintaining its stability.
Despite its utility, Pestonium possesses a volatile relationship with the environment. Periodically, the planet experiences the Rotting Tide, a planetary atmospheric shift where the concentration of airborne Pestonium particles reaches a fever pitch.
The most terrifying aspect of Pestonium is its effect on DNA. While native Pestonian life has evolved to metabolize the element, the creatures brought from Earth on the Arks were never meant for this world.
When Earth-borne genomes (wolves, bears, insects) interact with Pestonium, the results are catastrophic. The element forces a "forced evolution" or Gigantism.
The Threat
Common pests have reached monstrous proportions, possessing reinforced skeletal structures and hyper-aggressive neural pathways. This mutation is what transformed Pestonia Station from a simple mining outpost into a fortified military zone, necessitating the birth of the Hogman Defense Forces.
